Ponds
'Best Brook', named after the original owners, is the water course that winds its way through the property.
It passes through three ponds, en route to the main river, and is fed by numerous shallow springs. An old windmill pumps water from a well fed by one of these springs.
Middle Pond has a number of small Carex secta 'islands' which provide a natural habitat for wild ducks
to build their nests and raise their brood on.
Top Pond was excavated in the 1970's, dug out by a bulldozer driver living in the cottage at the time. Both Middle & Bottom Ponds were carved out in the '90's to drain the swamp created by the Top Pond overflow.
Left: Railway irons, previously used as power poles on the property, were recycled to construct the bottom bridge which crosses the lower ditch beyond the ponds.
Right: A boardwalk was built between Middle and Top Ponds as high water levels made the path too boggy in winter.
